OCTAVE
In 2004, I created "Octave," a solo composed using DanceForms 1.0 software, which premiered at Dansapce Project/St. Mark's Church. To accompany the live choreography, I collected five thousand used MetroCards which were deposited by twelve volunteers into the pulpit of the church during performance. These cards created an alarming audio-visual activity in the space, providing both a moving decor flying through the air, and a musical reverberation falling to the floor. My intention was to collapse the traditional distinctions between movement, sound, and décor. I also recreated Marcel Duchamp's "Bicycle
Wheel" (made of MetroCards), motorized by hand during the performance. Not only is the wheel one of the earliest technological innovations, but working with digital choreography software often points toward "readymade" movement, and the legacy of Duchamp.
