| underscore | exists as both a digital video, and an evening length work for seven performers, including four members of the Collective Opera Company, who were substantial collaborators throughout the production process. I choreographed, performed, motion captured, and animated the digital video through the use of digital choreographic software. I designed the movement for the piece hrough the use of 3D animation, taking the deconstruction of modernist portraiture as an inspiration, and presenting a digital “maquette” whose movements I mimicked throughout the rehearsal process. As this digital human body was plotted in the built domain, I then expanded the material from from digital software into a three-dimensional solo in real time, situating my moving body in opposition to the animated figure, taking cubist dimensions of composition and surrealist uses of “the double” into live performance, often to surprising effect. Motion capture technology was also been incorporated to capture (and erase) the original dancing “text” of the performance. The work premiered in May, 2006 at Dance Theater Workshop’s “Captured” series in New York City, and the work has also been presented domestically in the United States, internationally, and in numerous gallery spaces in New York.
